Ready. Set. WRITE! Week 9

/ August 3, 2015/ achievement, Dark Tower reference, goals, ready. set. WRITE!, SFLN/ 18 comments

Ready. Set. WRITE! is a summer accountability series that is hosted by Jaime MorrowKaty UppermanAlison MilerErin Funk, and Elodie Nowodazkij. We set goals for the summer and check in weekly.

Because of the revision cave, I wasn’t able to pre-game today’s post. So, I’m writing this from the confines of the day job desk before I get some revision time in. This, by the way, seems to be the preferred revision method for SFLN. I prefer the bed and The Stripey One. It’s so weird how fickle WIPs can be.

How I Did Last Week

  • Continue SCENES FROM LAST NIGHT revisions. So, so close to finished. As of last night, I have 40 pages left to revise. Then I have some new scenes to write.
  • Get up at 5 AM Tuesday-Friday so I can walk to work before it gets way too hot. Done. And because of that, I’ve been revising in the morning. My brain is toast in the evening.
  • Walk every day (except today). Erm, well. I walked every work day.
  • Stretch goal–>Get at least halfway through final workshop of PLANNING YOUR NOVEL. Nope. Revision takes precedent, though I have been thinking of the SNI and how it may not be a NaNo novel after all.

My Goal(s) For This Week Continue

  • SCENES FROM LAST NIGHT revisions.
  • Get up at 5 AM Tuesday-Friday so I can walk to work before it gets way too hot.
  • Walk every day.
  • Beta a friend’s manuscript.
  • Stretch goal–>Get at least halfway through final workshop of PLANNING YOUR NOVEL.

One Word/Phrase That Sums Up What I Revised

Taking too long.

Biggest Challenge I Faced This Week

The Tower. I stupidly decided to reread The Dark Tower series, completely forgetting how much of a junkie I am for it. Now when I should be revising, I’m thinking about what I just read like a literary Rhea of the Coos. Or I’m on Pinterest looking up fan art.

Something I Love About My WIP

Even though I’m not there yet, the mimes.

Good luck on hitting those goals this week.

  1. It's always dangerous to pick up a great book while you're working on something else, isn't it? They get into your head and nibble at the edges of your thoughts, it's very distracting.

Congratulations on meeting most of your goals! Even if it wasn't quite as often as you'd planned, that you're walking is still really good. 🙂 And so close to finishing revisions!

    Good luck this week! 🙂

  2. I only recently discovered how to do memes, and they are totally addicting! =) Great job on hitting goals. I admire your walking!

  3. Oh Pinterest. It's such a rabbit hole. Good luck this week!

  4. Ha! I hear ya on taking too long with revisions. I feel like mine always take at least twice as long as I anticipate. Still, you're doing awesome, Alicia! Best of luck meeting all your goals in the coming week. Rooting for you!

  5. Oh man, my revisions feel like they're taking foreeeeeever too, so you're not alone on that. But you only have 40 pages left, so that's awesome! Hope you whiz right through that last section this week! Hang in there because you're in the home stretch! 🙂

  6. You did great this week! I am so much more productive in the morning, so getting up early is a must for me…but my brain is definitely mush at night too 🙂 Cheering you on for your goals this week. You can doooo it!

  7. Did you say the mimes? I am both intrigued and terrified because mimes are super-scary. (But also kind of hot, if I'm honest…So.) More info on mimes please 🙂 And good luck this week!!!!

  8. Those books totally donthat. One day, I hope someone has that problem with my books.

  9. The mimes??? Now I'm curious!

Good luck this week, I'm sure you'll kick revision butt!

  10. I always want to create memes, but I'm not that level of creative. Tips on how to do this?

  11. Katy, yes! The revisions always take double the time you want/expect. One day it'll go on time.

  12. When I'm drafting, I can do it until like midnight if I need to, but revision is best in the morning. It's so weird.

  13. Mimes *are* creepy. And I miss the game Mime Hunt because of it.

  14. I wish I could tell you more. Maybe next week once I get to that part of my revision.

  15. Thank god I'm in the home stretch! (I may or may not have told people it would be query ready by October. (Oops.))

  16. It definitely is. Because when will you need to know about 50 uses for pallets?

  17. Are memes pictures w/sentences from your story across it? Or am I thinking of the wrong thing? Lol! (totally possible) If that is what memes are, I use Canva. Only $1 for the images!

And ohmygawd…I just reread what you wrote above in your post, and you said MIMES!! *faceplant* I read it as memes. Ignore me. =D

  18. Well, I know how to mime. And I have a free meme generator on my computer. I'm just not witty enough to use it.
